As used in 961 operations, the term avoidance point refers to a
location that you enter into the 961's database, and define by
its radius, lat/lon or loran TDs, or distance and bearing, and
indicate an area into which you specifically want to avoid nav-
igating. By comparison, the term waypoint is used to refer to a
specific point on the CHART screen that's used as either an
intermediate or final destination.
Avoidance points are user-defined areas that you want to
avoid crossing for reasons such as the presence of sandbars,
wrecks, and so on. Here are some of the functions you can per-
form with avoidance points:
store up to 200 avoidance points in the 961's database
quickly add any avoidance point
copy an existing avoidance point to create a new one
edit or erase avoidance points
The 961 always checks where your vessel is in relation to
nearby avoidance points, and alerts you whenever you're near
them. As soon as your vessel is on a course line with an avoid-
ance point, the yellow avoidance-point alarm appears on all
screens to alert you that an avoidance point is in your trip (the
avoidance point is not listed on the TRIP screen). This means,
for example, that when you decide to go to new coordinates
now, if this course line includes an avoidance point, the 961
will automatically display the yellow avoidance-point alarm. If,
instead, you decide to add the new coordinates to the end of
your trip, the 961 will display the yellow avoidance-point
alarm as soon as you're on the leg (but not before) that
includes the avoidance point.
As soon as you actually enter an avoidance point, a red avoid-
ance-point alarm alerts you that your vessel is inside an avoid-
ance point.
