4. Use the KEYPAD to enter the new avoidance point's name
(or use the default name, W0000, which automatically
names these avoidance points sequentially from W0001
up to W9999). You can use any characters on the KEY-
PAD. The name can be from one to nine characters long,
and must be different from all the other avoidance point
names, or waypoint names, in the 961's database. To select
a radius for this avoidance point, after you've finished
storing its coordinates here on the CHART screen, go to
the AVOIDANCE POINTS screen and edit the avoidance
point.
5. Press the MAKE NEW AVOID key (or press the RETURN
key to cancel).
The 961 stores the new avoidance point and returns to the
CHART screen, showing the navigation information about
this new avoidance point in the CURSOR INFO BAR.
To return to your vessel's position, press the VESSEL key.
To add a new avoidance point at the AVOIDANCE POINTS
screen:
1. At the AVOIDANCE POINTS screen, press the NEW AVOID
key.
The 961 creates a blank line just above the currently
selected avoidance point, and the flashing cursor goes to
the NAME field. Your present position, if known, is already
inserted into the LATITUDE and LONGITUDE fields (or
GRI, TD#1 and TD#2, if displayed).
2. Use the KEYPAD to enter a name for the new avoidance
point.
3. Press the CURSOR PAD left or right to move to the other
fields—RAD, DISTANCE, BRG, and LATITUDE and LONGI-
TUDE or GRI, TD#1 and TD#2, using the KEYPAD to
change the values. Enter coordinates as either distance
and bearing from your present position, or else as latitude
or longitude (or loran coordinates). Whichever you enter,
the 961 automatically calculates the other numbers. You
can enter data in any order into new avoidance point
fields—just press the CURSOR PAD left or right to high-
light a particular field. If you make a mistake during data
