Automatic Transaxle (CVTI Gear Position Signal
('96 -98 D16Y5 engine with CW)

This signals the ECM when the transmission is in @ or @ position.
Check the operation oI the A/T
gear position switch:
1. Turn the ignition switch ON flt).
2. Observe the A/T shift position
indicator and select each posi
tion separately.
See lhe A/T gear position indica-
tor insp€ction {see sec{ion l/tl.
Check tor a short in the wir6 (ATp
NP line):
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect the 14P connector
Irom the gauge assembly.
3. Disconnect the 26P connector
from the TCM.
4. Turn the ignition switch ON fll).
5. Measure voltage between ECM
c o n n e c t o r t e r m i n a l s A 9 a n d
c29.
Check for a short in the wire lATp
NP linell
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect the ECM connec
tor C (31P).
3. Check for continuity between
b o d y g r o u n d a n d E C M c o n
nector terminal C29.
ls there approx. 5 V?
Check for an open in the wire lATp
NP lina):
1 . T u r n t h e i g n i t i o n s w i t c h O F F _
2 . B e c o n n e c t t h e 1 4 P c o n n e c t o r
t o t h e g a u g e a s s e m b l y .
3 . R e c o n n e c t t h e 2 6 P c o n n e c t o r
t o t h e T C M .
4 . S t a r t t h e e n g i n e .
5 . M e a s u r e v o l t a g e b e t w e e n
E C M c o n n e c t o r t e r m i n a l s A 9
a n d C 2 9 w i t h t h e t r a n s m i s
s i o n i n E a n d E p o s a t i o n t
Repair short in the wire between
t h e E C M { C 2 9 1 a n d t h e g a u g e
assemblv,
S u b s t i t u t e a k n o w n - g o o d E C M
a n d r e c h e c k . l f p r e s c r i b e d v o l t -
age is now avrilable, replace the
o . i g i n a l E C M .
