Valve Movement
Measure the guide-to-stem clearance with a dial indi-
cator while rocking the stem in the direction of normal
thrust (wobble method).

recheck using a new valve.

lf the measurement is now within the service
limit, reassemble using a new valve.

recheck using the alternate method below, then
replace the valve and guide, if necessary.
NOTE: An alternate method of checking guide to
stem clearance is to subtract the O.D. of the valve
stem, measured with a micrometer, from the l.D. of
t h e v a l v e g u i d e , m e a s u r e d w i t h a n i n s i d e
micrometer or ball gauge. Take the measurements
i n t h r e e p l a c e s a l o n g t h e v a l v e s t e m a n d t h r e e
places inside the valve guide. The difference be-
t w e e n t h e l a r g e s t g u i d e m e a s u r e m e n t a n d t h e
smallest stem measurement should not exceed the
service limit.
