Troubleshooting Intermittent Electrical Faults

Attempt to Duplicate the Fault
1.
Operate the machine based on the information provided by the operator.
2.
Observe the machine during normal operation. Pay attention to how the machine is being operated.
3.
Work toward being able to duplicate the fault predictably.
4.
Make notes as you proceed through your diagnosis. Document your steps and any test results for future
reference.
Complete the Basic Maintenance Checks
Check the Condition of the Battery
1.
Inspect for any corroded, loose, or damaged wires and connections, including all chassis ground points.
Loosen, clean, and tighten the battery connections (cables, posts, etc.).
Loosen, clean, and tighten the chassis ground points.
2.
Load test the battery to ensure it meets the output specification.
Test the Charging System
Test the charging system to ensure it meets the output specification.
Inspect Fuses and Fusible Links
1.
Verify all fuses are of the correct rating and that the contacts are clean and securely seated.
2.
Verify all fusible links are of the correct rating and that the connectors are clean and securely seated.
Note:
Open fuses are not necessarily the cause of a failure.
Circuit Wiring and Connectors
Common issues to look for are:
Damaged wiring insulation
Corrosion
Broken wire strands
Incorrect wiring circuit or harness routing
Loose connections between connectors
Loose, bent, or backed out connector terminals
Connector housing locks that are broken or not engaging fully
Improper or weak crimps, splices, and soldered joints
Discolored or burned connectors
CAN Circuits and Communication Capture
If the intermittent issue remains after the basic diagnostic processes are complete, use the controller-specific
diagnostic tools and functions available to monitor or capture data as the malfunction occurs. These include:
Toro DIAG Save function (see the Toro DIAG User's Guide)
Toro DIAG CAN Capture function (see the Toro DIAG User's Guide)
Yanmar SA-D Error Diagnosis Data Save and Display Functions (see the Yanmar SmartAssist Operation
Manual, Chapter 7)
Note:
It is also possible to coordinate with Toro TAC and obtain a memorator to record CAN bus activity
to assist in identifying intermittent faults.
