Chapter 2 - Introducing the Northstar 951/952
Cleaning the screen
Pre-packaged moist tow-
ellettes (especially those
containing a small amount
of alcohol) are excellent for
cleaning the unit's display
window. You might want to
keep a supply on hand to
wipe off fingerprints and
other smudges.

Use caution when cleaning the display window in front of the
display screen. Although the window is resistant to scratches,
you can damage it if you wipe dirt off with a dry cloth. Always
use a damp cloth when wiping the window. Use a small
amount of window cleaner or alcohol to dissolve any oil or
grease on the screen.
Whenever possible, avoid touching the window with your fin-
gers, as natural oils from your hand will temporarily degrade
the characteristics of the window and cause your fingerprints
to appear as bright reflections. These will disappear when the
screen is cleaned as described above.
When you turn your unit on, you'll see your present position
represented by a boat symbol situated at the center of the
chart. A unit that's been used recently either at or near that
same location is usually ready to navigate within one minute.
If the unit doesn't acquire GPS signals within two minutes,
you'll see a flashing exclamation point symbol in the lower
right portion of the screen, and the words ACQUIRE or SKY
SEARCH in the status box at the top of the GPS POSITION
screen. The flashing exclamation point means that an alarm
message is present and waiting for your acknowledgment.
