Removal/lnstallation

SRS component locations, precautions, and proceclures
i n t h e S R S s e c t r o n ( 2 4 ) b e f o r e p e r t o r m i n g r e p a i r s o r s e r -
v i c e .
N O T E : B e f o r e r e m o v i n g t h e s t e e r i n g c o l u m n f o r S R S ,
remove the driver's airbag assembly and cable reel lsee
s e c t i o n 2 4 ) .
1 . R e m o v e t h e s t e e r i n g w h e e l ( s e e p a g e 1 7 3 5 ) .
2 . R e m o v e t h e d r i v e r ' s d a s h b o a r d l o w e r c o v e r a n d
driver's knee bolster (see section 20).

Remove the combination switch assembly from the
s t e e r i n g c o l u m n s h a { t b y d i s c o n n e c t i n g t h e c o n n e c -
tors.
4.
Disconnect the ignition switch connectors.
5 . R e m o v e t h e s t e e r i n g j o i n t c o v e r .

B e m o v e t h e s t e e r i n g j o i n t b o l l s .
7 .
D i s c o n n e c t t h e s t e e r i n g i o i n t b y m o v i n g t h e j o i n t
toward the column, and remove it from the column
shaft.
8 . R e m o v e t h e s t e e r i n g c o l u m n b y r e m o v i n g t h e
a t t a c h i n g n u t s a n d b o l t .

NOTE: Take care not to let the
retaining collar fall out of
position during installation.

22 N.m {2.2 kgf.m, 16lbtft}

Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure
NOTE:
. Make sure the steering joint is connected as follows:
a. Insert the upper end of the steering ioint onto the
steering shaft (line up the bolt hole with the flat on
the shait), and loosely install the upper joint bolt.
b . S l i p t h e l o w e r e n d o f t h e s t e e r i n g j o i n t o n t o t h e
pinion shaft (line up the bolt hole with the groove
a r o u n d t h e s h a f t ) , a n d l o o s e l y i n s t a l l t h e l o w e r
joint bolt.
Be sure that the lowei joint bolt is securely in the
groove in the pinion shaft.
c . P u l l o n t h e s t e e r i n g j o i n t t o m a k e s u r e t h a t t h e
steering joint js fully seated. Then tighten the ioint
b o l t s .

8e sure the wires are not caught or pinched by any
parts when installing the column
.
Make sure the wire harness is routed and fastened
properly.
. Make sure the connectors are properly connected.
