REMOVAL
NOTE
Place a clean shop towel over the crankcase to prevent
the possibility of the clip falling into the crankcase.
Remove the piston pin clip using a pair of pliers.
Press the piston pin out of the piston.
2-stroke engines:
Remove the needle bearing from the small end of the connect-
ing rod
Do not apply side force to the connecting rod.
Do not let the clip fall into the crankcase.

Mark and store the pistons and piston pins so that they

Clean carbon deposits from the piston.

will scratch the groove.

Inspect the piston rings for movement by pressing the rings.
The rings should be able to move in its groove without

Spread each piston ring and remove it by lifting it up at a point
just opposite the gap.
CAUTION
Do not damage the piston ring by spreading the ends too

far.
Some 2-stroke engines: Remove the expander from the se-
1
cond ring groove.
Inspect the piston:

Sliding surface for scratches or wear.
Remove any small surface scratches using #600-#800
sandpaper. If there are deep scratches, replace the piston.

Piston ring grooves-for
excessive wear. Replace the
piston as necessary.
4-stroke engines: Oil pass holes in the oil ring groove-for
clogs. Clean the oil holes with compressed air.
