Stall Speed Test
1. Set the parking brake, and block the front wheels.
2. Connect a tachometer to the engine, and start the engine.
3. Make sure the A/C switch is OFF.
4. After the engine has w a r m e d up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on), shift to HI position.
5. Fully press the brake pedal and accelerator for 6 to 8 seconds, and note engine speed. Do not move the shift lever
w h i l e raising engine speed.
6. A l l o w t w o minutes for cooling, then repeat the test in H , HJ, and El positions.
NOTE:
• Do not test stall speed for more than 10 seconds at a t i m e .
• Stall speed tests should be used for diagnostic purposes only.
• Stall speed should be the same in B , H], DD, and El positions.
• Do not test stall speed w i t h the A/T pressure gauges installed.
Stall Speed rpm:
F23A1 and F23A4 Engines:
Specification: 2,550 rpm
Service Limit: 2,400-2,700 rpm
F23A5 Engine:
Specification: 2,500 rpm
Service Limit: 2,350-2,650 rpm
TROUBLE
PROBABLE C A U S E
Stall rpm high in HI, HI, HI, and El positions
• Low fluid level or ATF p u m p output
• Clogged ATF strainer
• Pressure regulator valve stuck closed
• Slipping clutch
Stall r p m high in U position
Slippage of 1st clutch
Stall rpm high in H O position
Slippage of 2nd clutch
Stall rpm high in El position
Slippage of 4th clutch
Stall rpm low in E , OS, D O and El positions
• Engine output low
• Torque converter one-way clutch slipping
