Pistons
Installation
1.
Apply
a coat
of
engine
oil
to the
ring grooves and
cylinder
bores.
If the crankshaft is already installed:

Set the
crankshaft to BOC
for ea ch
cylinder.
3.
Remov
e
the
connecting
rod
caps,
and slip short sec-
tions of
rubber hose over
the threaded ends
of
the
connecting
rod bolts.
4.
Install the ring
compressor,
and
check
that the
bear-
ing is
securely in
place.
5.
Position the
piston in the
cylinder,
and
tap
it
in using
the wooden handle
of a
hammer.
Maintain
down-
ward force
on
the ring
compressor
to prevent rings
from expanding before
entering
the
cylinder
bore.
6.
Stop after the ring
compressor pops free, and check
the connecting rod-la-crank journal alignment
before pushing piston into
place.
7.
Install the rod
caps with
bearings,
and
torque the
nuts
to:
31 N'm
(3
.2 kgl·m,
23

Apply
engine
oil to
the
bolt threads.
If the crankshaft
is
not installed:
2.
Remove the
rod
caps and bearings, and install
the
ring compressor.
3.
Position the piston in the
cyli
n der,
and
tap
it in
using the
wooden handle of
a
hammer.
Maintain
downward
force on the ring compressor to
prevent
rings
from
expanding
before entering the
cylinder
bore
.
4.
Position
all
the
pistons
at
top
dead
center.

Crankshaft
Installation
1.
Apply
a coat of engine o
il to the main bearings and
rod
bearings.
2.
Insert the bearing halves in the cylinder block
and
connecting rods.
3.
Hold the
crankshaft so
the
rod
journals
for cylinders
NO.
2
and
No.
3 are
straight down.
4.
Lower the
crankshaft
into the
block,
seating
the
rod
journals
into
connecting
rods No
.
2
and
NO.3.
Install the rod
caps
and nuts finger-tight.
Grooved sides
face
outward
.
5.
Rotate the
crankshaft clockwise,
and
seat
the
jour-
nals into connecting rods No.1
and
No.4. Install
the
rod
caps and
nuts finger-tight. Install the
caps
so
the bearing recess is
on
the
same
side
as the
recess
in the rod.
6.
Check
the rod bearing
clearance with
plastigage
(see page
7
-8),
then torque the
capnuts.
Torque:
31 N·m 13.2 kgl·m, 23 IbUt)
Apply engine oil to the bolt threads.
7.
Install the thrust washers
on
the No.4 journal.
Line
up the
mark when
installing
connec
ting rod
cap
.
