CHECKING AND CHARGING THE BATTERY

This model is equipped with a VRLA (Valve
Regulated Lead Acid) battery. There is no need
to check the electrolyte or to add distilled water.
However, the battery lead connections need to
be checked and, if necessary, tightened.

WARNING
Electrolyte is poisonous and dangerous
G
since it contains sulfuric acid, which caus-
es severe burns. Avoid any contact with
skin, eyes or clothing and always shield
your eyes when working near batteries. In
case of contact, administer the following
FIRST AID.
EXTERNAL: Flush with plenty of water.
G
INTERNAL: Drink large quantities of water
G
or milk and immediately call a physician.
EYES: Flush with water for 15 minutes
G
and seek prompt medical attention.
Batteries produce explosive hydrogen gas.
G
Therefore, keep sparks, flames, cigarettes,
etc., away from the battery and provide suf-
ficient ventilation when charging it in an en-
closed space.
KEEP THIS AND ALL BATTERIES OUT OF
G
THE REACH OF CHILDREN.

NOTICE
To charge a VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Ac-
id) battery, a special (constant - voltage) bat-
tery
charger
is
conventional battery charger will damage
the battery.
TIP
Since VRLA batteries are sealed, it is not possi-
ble to check the charge state of the battery by
measuring the specific gravity of the electrolyte.
Therefore, the charge of the battery has to be
checked by measuring the voltage at the battery
terminals.

TIP
The charge state of an VRLA battery can be
G
checked by measuring its open-circuit voltage
(i.e., the voltage when the positive battery ter-
minal is disconnected).
No charging is necessary when the open-cir-
G
cuit voltage equals or exceeds 12.8 V.
a
b. Check the charge of the battery, as shown in
the charts and the following example.
Example
Open-circuit voltage = 12.0 V
Charging time = 6.5 hours
Charge of the battery = 20–30%
