CHECKING AND CLEANING THE THROTTLE
BODIES

WARNING
If the throttle bodies are subjected to strong
shocks or dropped during cleaning, replace
them as a set.
TIP
Clean the throttle bodies only if they cannot be
synchronized using the air screws. Before
cleaning the throttle bodies, check the following
items:
Valve clearance

Spark plugs
G
Compression pressure
G
Air filter element
G
Throttle body joints
G
Fuel hoses
G
Air induction system
G
Exhaust system
G
Breather hoses
G
Throttle body hoses
G
Fast idle plunger inlet hose
G
Fast idle plunger outlet hose
G
1. Check:
Throttle bodies
G
Cracks/damage → Replace the throttle bod-
ies as a set.
2. Clean:
Throttle bodies

NOTICE
Observe the following precautions; other-

wise, the throttle bodies may not operate
properly.
Do not open the throttle valves quickly.
G
Do not subject the throttle bodies to exces-
G
sive force.
Wash the throttle bodies in a petro-
G
leum-based solvent.
Do not use any caustic carburetor cleaning
G
solution.
Do not apply cleaning solvent directly to
G
any plastic parts, sensors, or seals.
Do not directly push the throttle valves to
G
open them.
Do not remove the bolts which not instruct-
G
ed as so.
Do not touch the synchronizing screw "a";
G
otherwise, the throttle body synchroniza-
tion will be affected.
Do not touch the throttle adjust screw "b".

TIP
Check the synchronization after cleaning the
throttle body.
If they cannot be synchronized as specified, re-
place the throttle body assembly.

a. Place the throttle bodies on a flat surface with
the engine side facing up.
b. Install the caps (18P-2464V-00) onto the
hose fittings "a".
c. Open the throttle valve using the throttle pul-
ley "b" holding that position.

When cleaning the throttle bodies, be careful
not to injure yourself on the throttle valves or
other components of the throttle bodies.

d. Apply a petroleum-based solvent to the throt-
tle valves and the inside of the throttle bodies
to remove any carbon deposits.
TIP
Do not allow any petroleum-based solvent to

enter the opening for the injectors.
