CHECKING THE THERMOSTAT

1. Check:
Thermostat "1"
G
Does not open at 71–85°C (160–185°F) →
Replace.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
a. Suspend the thermostat "3" in a container "4"
filled with water.
b. Slowly heat the water "2".
c. Place a thermometer "1" in the water.
d. While stirring the water, observe the thermo-
stat and thermometer's indicated tempera-
ture.
A. Fully closed
B. Fully open
C. Opening (mm)
D. Temperature
TIP
If the accuracy of the thermostat is in doubt, re-
place it. A faulty thermostat could cause serious
overheating or overcooling.

ASSEMBLY
1. Install:
TIP
Install the thermostat with its breather hole "a"
facing up.
2. Install:
TIP
Before installing the thermostat cover to the cyl-
inder head, lubricate the O-rings with a thin coat
of lithium-soap-based grease.
