Taking Blood Pressure Measurements

The blood pressure cuff can be used on either arm. Consider any medical condi-
tions that exclude monitoring blood pressure on one arm or the other. Decide and
communicate to the patient which arm to use. A patient should rest their arm so it
is at or below heart level to obtain the most accurate reading.
The position of a patient's arm can impact the readings. A consistent position
should be recommended to increase the accuracy of the data. If using an oximeter,
place the cuff on the arm opposite the oximeter.
While taking blood pressure, the cuff inflation pressure appears in the systolic (top)
area of the monitor screen. When the reading is complete, both the systolic (top)
and diastolic (bottom) results appear on the monitor screen. Patients should be
instructed that their position, movement, talking, physiological conditions and
other factors can have an impact on blood pressure measurement.
Make sure that the blood pressure hoses are not kinked, compressed or restricted.
Caution: Personal Injury Hazard
Placing the Blood Pressure Cuff
Prior to taking a blood pressure reading, the monitor will wait until the patient com-
pletes the following:
1. Hold the cuff so that once on the arm, the cord points toward the hand.
2. With a palm up, the patient should place their hand
3. Position the cuff so that the air hose is off-center,

Ensure a patient's arm is at rest and that the patient is not talking during a
reading.
Find a consistent time to take vital signs, when the patient is relaxed and
comfortable.
Place the finger sensor on an arm that is not used for blood pressure
measurements.
Consider the nearby ambient lighting and try to move to a location with limited
light noise.
For patients with a hard-to-read pulse, or very light/dark skin, try using a
different type of oximeter, such as the Nonin pulse oximeter.
Prolonged inflation can result in impairment of circulation. Stop inflation at any time by pressing
the START or Power button on the blood pressure monitor.

toward the inner side of the arm so that it is in line
with the little finger.
