Chapter 4

• Set 'Phone Avail.' Detection. The Recorder can detect whether there is a phone line
available (connected, and not in use) by checking the voltage on the line before it
picks up. If you are using the same line to make a modem connection for another
device (such as your computer), then this check prevents the Recorder from picking
up the phone and possibly disrupting the other modem connection.
However, if you are experiencing '"Failed, Line unavailable" errors, or if it seems that
the Recorder is not making the daily call and you are running out of Program Guide
Data, you may have a low-voltage phone system that the Recorder cannot detect
during this check. In this case.
try
turning off 'Phone Avail.' Detection.
Note that with 'Phone Avail.' Detection turned off, the Recorder will pick up the line
to check for a dial tone, so if you happen to be talking on the phone when the Recorder
tries to calL you may hear a click on the line. If you have another modem call in
progress (on your computer or other device), the call may be disrupted if the Recorder
picks up the line to make the service call.
