ACM-VLX/VLX/EXP/AXM
The VLX is significantly different from earlier Alerton field controllers. It
introduces new architecture concepts, configuration procedures, and installation
practices. Review this section carefully before you install and configure the
VLX.
The ACM-VLX functions almost identically to the VLX but it is a virtual device
running inside of the ACM. The ACM-VLX is the first case where the number of
instances of the program is limited by a license.
The ACM by default (with no ACM-VLX license), allows 1 slot to run the VLX
application (one VLX application is provided for free with each ACM). If you
want to run the VLX application in more than 1 slot, then you must buy an
additional VLX license for each additional slot (up to 4 slots, which would need
3 additional ACM-VLX license instances).
If you try to run more VLX applications than the ACM is licensed for, then the
additional slots will simply not connect to an I/O network. The Slot Startup Error
Log for that slot will indicate the slot is not communicating due to a license limit,
but the "License Exceeded" BV will not turn ON. The License Exceeded BV is
just for device counting (number of VLCs, TUXs, Modbus VDEVs, etc).
Licensed ACM-VLX programs will continue to operate normally under device
limit exceeded conditions. Doing otherwise may endanger expensive hardware.
VLX, ACM-VLX, EXP, and AXM operation is interdependent. The VLX/ACM-
VLX is the processor. EXPs/AXMs are external modules that provide all I/O
capability. EXPs/AXMs connect to the VLX/ACM-VLX over a simple 18 AWG
two conductor shielded, twisted-pair bus. The VLX/ACM-VLX hosts
automation features (schedules, trendlogs, and alarms) and DDC for any
BACnet device on the network. Each VLX/ACM-VLX supports up to eight
EXPs/AXMs for a possible 176 I/O maximum points. You can mix EXPs and
AXMs and a maximum of EXPs/AXMs can connect to the same VLX/ACM-
VLX.
The VLX/ACM-VLX supports BACnet Ethernet, BACnet/IP, and MS/TP
1
connections
, making EXP/AXM I/O, operational, and functional data available
to the site-wide automation system as BACnet objects and properties. Each
VLX/EXP or VLX/AXM assembly appears to a BACnet network as a single
BACnet device. The VLX/ACM-VLX also supports Annex J BACnet/IP as a
BACnet broadcast management device (BBMD).
1. Ethernet is the preferred and recommended primary connection method to the
BACnet internetwork. Using MS/TP as the primary connection should be avoided.
It should be used only when data traffic requirements will be relatively low and
Ethernet connection is cost-prohibitive or otherwise difficult to provide. The total
number of devices on MS/TP should be limited to 10 or fewer. Other factors will
affect network performance such as global-controller-hosted VLC point alarms,
global controller DDC references to devices on the MS/TP, and active operator
workstations requesting data from devices on the MS/TP.
