Symptom: Unit Jumps Out of Gear

Possible Cause
Equipment clutch not disengaging
Shifting washers in backwards
Improper fit of case cover
Shifting keys broken or damaged
Chamfer on shift gear on wrong side
Shifter stop assembled backwards
Gear improperly installed
Forks and rod assembly incorrectly installed
Shifter/brake shaft keyway damaged
Parts missing

Symptom: Unit Can Not Be Shifted (or Difficult to Shift)

Possible Cause
Shifter lever improperly installed
Teeth of gears are worn beyond tolerances
Spring in shift fan weak or broken
Attaching screws for shift lever and housing
assembly not properly torqued
Shifter/brake shaft improperly assembled
Keys weak or worn – shift gear damage
Shift lever bent and hitting unit frame
Shift rod worn
Constant mesh gears improperly installed
on counter shaft
Belt guides on engine/transmission/idler
assembly are out of adjustment

Symptom: Unit Does Not Drive

Possible Cause
Keys sheared in drive pulleys
Shift keys broken
Broken input gear
Differential bevel gears broken
Stripped teeth on gears

Remedies
Adjust clutch according to equipment instructions
Chamfered or rounded side of washer must be toward keys.
Recheck positioning of thrust washers. A misplacement or
omission of washers can cause binding.
Replace keys and check unit for other damage.
Check that bevels on shifter gears are correct (fork
flanges should be toward each other). On 3 gear
cluster, small gear and medium gear chamfers go
down toward big gear.
Determine that notch in STOP aligns with shifter forks in
NEUTRAL position.
Review positioning of gearing.
Remove assembly. Recheck and correctly position parts.
Remove nicks and burrs from keyway.
Install missing parts.
Remedies
Disassemble shifting lever and check for proper assembly.
Replace worn gears.
Replace Spring.
Torque screws to 10 ft lb (13.6 Nm)
Reassemble properly.
Replace keys/shift gear.
Replace shift lever.
Replace rods.
Reposition gears.
Adjust belt guides.
Remedies
Replace
