Appendix B
Preparing to Take Blood Pressure
The blood pressure cuff can be used on either arm. Follow your health care provider's instructions for
which arm you use. We recommend that you use the same arm consistently. Rest your arm so it is at or
below heart level to obtain the most accurate reading. If you are using an oximeter, place the cuff on the
arm opposite the oximeter.
The position of your arm can significantly affect the readings. A consistent position should be used for
each reading to increase the accuracy of the data.
While taking blood pressure, the cuff inflation pressure appears in the systolic (top) area. When the reading
is complete, both the systolic (top) and diastolic (bottom) results appear.
Your position, movement, talking, physiological conditions and other factors can have an impact on blood
pressure measurement.
IMPORTANT: Make sure that the blood pressure hoses are not kinked, compressed or restricted.
CAUTION: Personal Injury Hazard
Refer to manufacturer's documentation for more information on peripheral devices.
Placing the Blood Pressure Cuff
To properly place the blood pressure cuff:
1. Hold the cuff so that once on your arm, the cord points toward your hand.
2. With the palm of your hand up, slip your hand through the cuff.
3. Position the cuff tube off-center, toward the inner side of the arm so that it is in line with your little
finger.
4. Slide the cuff up your arm over your elbow. There should be about a two-finger space between the
bend in your elbow and the cuff.
5. Do not make the cuff too tight. You should be able to slide a finger between the cuff and your arm.
6. Wrap the cuff end under and around your arm and fasten it to the velcro.
