Controlling the Dipper and the Bucket
You can control the dipper and the bucket by operating the
right lever
(Figure
58) as follows:
Push this lever forward to extend ("crowd out") the
dipper and the boom; pull it rearward (toward you) to curl
("crowd in") the dipper and the boom.
Move this lever to the left to curl ("crowd in") the bucket
to fill it; move the lever to the right to dump the bucket.

Note: By moving the lever in an "X" pattern rather than
merely a "+" pattern, you can curl in and full the bucket or
extend ("crowd out") and dump the bucket at the same time
(Figure
59).
Note: With experience, you will be able to use both levers at
the same time with ease, lifting or lowering; swinging left or
right; and filling or dumping all in one smooth motion.

Filling the Bucket
Fill the bucket by operating the dipper, the boom, and the
bucket as necessary to keep the bottom of the bucket parallel
with the cut
(Figure
60).
1. Correct (the bucket is
parallel with the cut)
2. Wrong (the bucket will dig
in and cause a stall)
Allow the bucket teeth and cutting edge to cut through the
ground like a knife blade
that you are digging determines the depth of the cut.
Note: Do not backfill a trench by swinging the backhoe
bucket against the soil; instead, use the backfill blade.
