Precautions

Before beginning installation or removal, observe the following precautions:
Danger: Never look into the end of an optical cable. Permanent eye damage or blindness can occur if laser
radiation is present.
Danger: Never handle exposed fiber with bare hands or touch it to bare skin. Fiber fragments can enter
the skin and are difficult to detect and remove. Follow local safety precautions regarding fiber.
Warning: PIUs and pluggable optics can be damaged by ESD during installation, removal, storage, or
shipment. Such equipment is stamped with antielectrostatic marks and requires special care in handling and
storage. When handling PIUs and pluggable optics, keep in mind that they can be damaged by ESD during
installation, removal, or whenever they are contacted so be sure to wear a wrist strap as described in the
next Warning.
Warning: Wear an ESD wrist strap with a minimum resistance of 1 megohm that is properly secured to the
ESD grounding wrist strap connection socket when handling PIUs and pluggable optics to prevent possible
PIU damage. Before using the strap, check it for opens, shorts, and the minimum resistance value. If the
strap does not pass these checks, do not use it.
