This appendix provides definitions for acronyms and technical terms used throughout this
document.
APIPA
Automatic Private IP Addressing. A Microsoft® defined policy for automatic
selection of a unique IP address in small networks with no DHCP services.
Clip
A recording containing video, audio, and data stored on an HTRD400 Recorder. The
clip is recorded from any active camera(s) during a specified time interval.
Compression
Compression is a mathematical process that reduces the amount of data
in a given file. That is, it reduces the representation of the information but not the
information itself. Compression saves transmission time or capacity. It also saves storage
space on storage devices such as hard disks, tape drives, and removable disks.
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. A protocol for automatic TCP/IP
configuration that provides static and dynamic address allocation and management.
Ethernet
A local area network used for connecting computers, printers, workstations,
terminals, servers, and so on within the same building or campus. Ethernet operates over
twisted wire and over coaxial cable at speeds up to 10 Mbps.
Frames
A single video image is called a frame. A frame is made up of a series of
horizontally scanned lines.
Firmware
Software kept in semipermanent memory. Firmware is usually stored on
PROMS (Programmable Read Only Memory) or EPROMS (Electrical PROMS). Firmware
contains software which is so constantly called upon by a computer that it is "burned" into
a chip. Firmware is nonvolatile. That is, it is not forgotten when power is shut off.
FPS
Frames per second.
GPS
Global Positioning System. A GPS receiver provides vehicle position, direction, and
speed based on latitude, longitude, and altitude data it gathers from satellites that circle
the earth twice a day.
