Removal (Fig. 4)
1. Park machine on a level surface with cutting deck
lowered. Stop engine, engage parking brake and re-
move key from the ignition switch.
2. Lift the footrest, exposing the top of the cutting deck.
Support the footrest with prop rod.
3. Remove deck covers from top of cutting deck.
4. On right side idler arm, loosen jam nuts (item 22) that
secure idler stop bolt (item 21) to cutting deck to allow
clearance between idler and stop bolt.
5. Remove drive belts from deck pulleys.
6. Insert nut driver or small piece of pipe onto the end
of the torsion spring for the idler arm.
CAUTION
Be careful when removing tension from the idler
arm torsion spring. The spring is under heavy
load and may cause personal injury.
7. Carefully push the torsion spring end down and away
from the idler arm to unhook the spring from the arm.
8. Remove snap ring that retains idler arm assembly to
cutting deck.
9. Remove idler components as needed using Figure
4 as a guide.
Installation (Fig. 4)
1. Install removed idler components using Figure 4 as
a guide. Secure idler arm assembly to cutting deck with
snap ring.
2. Insert nut driver or small piece of pipe onto the end
of the torsion spring for the idler arm.
CAUTION
Be careful when applying tension to the idler arm
torsion spring. The spring is under heavy load
and may cause personal injury.
3. Carefully push down on the torsion spring end to get
the spring under the idler arm mounting plate. Then re-
lease the spring slowly to lock it into place.

4. Install drive belts to pulleys.
5. If idler arm on right side of cutting deck was removed,
check that clearance between idler arm and stop bolt is
from 0.100" to 0.160" (2.5 to 4.0 mm) (Fig. 5). If neces-
sary, adjust jam nut location on stop bolt to allow proper
clearance.
6. Install deck covers to cutting deck. Lower the foot-
rest.
