SECTION 4: LATHE OPERATIONS

Operation Overview

To reduce risk of eye or face injury from
flying chips, always wear approved safety
glasses and face shield when operating this
machine.

To complete a typical lathe operation, the
operator does the following:
1.
Examines workpiece to make sure it is suit-
able for turning, then securely mounts it in
lathe.
2.
Installs tooling, aligns it with workpiece, then
backs it away to establish a safe startup
clearance.
3.
Removes all setup tools from lathe.
4.
Checks for safe clearances by rotating
workpiece by hand at least one full revolution.
5.
Moves slides to where they will be used dur-
ing operation.
6.
Sets correct spindle speed for operation.
7.
If using power feed, selects proper feed rate
for the operation.
8.
Puts on safety glasses, rolls up sleeves,
removes jewelry, and secures any clothing,
jewelry, or hair that could get entangled in
moving parts.
9.
Resets Emergency Stop/RESET button, then
starts spindle rotation.
10. Uses carriage handwheels or power feed
options to move tooling into workpiece for
operations.
11. When finished cutting, moves spindle lever to
OFF position, waits for spindle to completely
stop, then removes workpiece.
