CARTRIDGE DISK UNITS
This section describes the functions, charac
teristics, operating and maintenance procedures
of the CD U91 01/9102/9103/9104 Cartridge Disk
Units used with the Level 6 system (see Figure
4-1). The cartridge disk unit is a random access
storage device with a data storage capacity of 2.5
to 10 million bytes per disk for the 256 byte
sector format or 2.8 to 11.2 million bytes for the
576 byte sector format. The drives are available as
low or high density units with data recorded at
100 or 200 tracks per inch (tpi) respectively, and
with either a removeable cartridge only, or with
both a removeable and a fixed disk on the same
spindle.
Data is recorded on the magnetic oxide coated
surface of a double-sided 14-inch aluminum disk
used with the drive. The disk may be removed
and changed as application permits. Data repre
sentation is in ASCII. The software is optionally
capable of translating from ASCII to EBCDIC to
produce a drive (subsystem) that is compatible
with IBM equipment.
Drives are available singly or up to a maximum
of four per system. The drives interface with the
Level 6 processor by means of a single-board Mass
Storage Controller (MSC91 01) and a Cartridge
Disk Device-Pac (Cartridge Disk Unit Adapter)
CDM9101.
CARTRIDGE DISK UNIT ASSEMBLY
A cartridge disk assembly consists of one to
four cartridge disk units (drives) rackmounted
and installed as a slide-in unit in a system cabinet.
