System overview
5.1 What is the S7-1500R/H redundant system?
The following figure shows a configuration of the S7-1500H with R1 devices in two separate
PROFINET rings.

Line topology
If you configure the redundant system in a line topology, then no PROFINET ring is required.
The PROFINET devices in the line topology do not have to support media redundancy (MRP).
This means that no MRP reconfiguration takes place and shorter monitoring times are
possible. In applications with SIMATIC Safety, this allows smaller safety distances to be
implemented.
Other devices, e.g., PROFINET devices with one port, are decoupled from the line via a switch
④.
With line topology, the H-CPUs must be located at the ends of the line.
