PCI-X Expansion Slots

The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server offers four 64-bit, 100-MHz, peered PCI-X
buses that ensure optimal availability and performance. The server provides support
for six expansion slots (3.3V keyed)—four hot-plug slots and two non-hot-plug slots.
PCI-X technology
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server features six expansion slots operating
across three buses that support the latest industry-standard technology, Peripheral
Component Interconnect Extended (PCI-X). This follow-on technology increases
the data throughput capacity of PCI technology and minimizes bottlenecks
associated with high-bandwidth devices, such as:
— Gigabit Ethernet NICs
— Fiber channel controllers
— HP Smart Array Controllers
The fourth bus is dedicated to support the embedded Smart Array 5i Plus
Controller.
Load balancing and PCI-X Hot Plug
The server's PCI-X expansion slots operate across three separate buses to enable
load balancing across multiple expansion boards. Four hot-plug slots provide
enhanced availability.
