MAINTENANCE
Sharpening t he s aw c hain
CAUTION: Before doing any work on the guide bar or
chain, always switch off the engine and pull the plug
cap off the spark plug (see " Replacing the spark plug").
Always w ear p rotective g loves!
The c hain n eeds s harpening w hen:
The sawdust produced when sawing damp wood looks like
wood fl our.
The chain penetrates the wood only under great pressure.
The c utting e dge i s v isibly d amaged.
The saw is pulled to the left or right when sawing. This is
caused b y u neven s harpening o f t he c hain.
Important: Sharpen frequently, but without removing
too m uch m etal!
Generally, 2 o r 3 s trokes o f t he fi le w ill b e e nough.
Have the chain resharpened at a service center when you
have already sharpened it yourself several times.
Proper s harpening:

with d ifferent l engths r esult i n r ough r unning o f t he c hain a nd
can cause cracks in the chain.
The m inimum c utter l ength: 0 .11" ( 3 m m). D o n ot r esharpen
the c hain w hen t he m inimum c utter l ength h as b een r eached;
at t his p oint, t he c hain m ust b e r eplaced ( see t he "Extract f rom
the s pare-­parts l ist" a nd " Replacing t he s aw c hain").
The depth of the cut is determined by the difference in
height b etween t he d epth l imiter ( round n ose) a nd t he c ut-­
ting edge.
The best results are obtained with a depth-­limiter depth of
.025" ( 0.64 m m).
CAUTION: Excessive d epth
increases t he r isk o f k ickback!
The sharpening angle (α) m ust b e i dentical f or a ll c utters!
30° f or c hain t ype 0 92 ( 91VG), 4 92 ( 91PX), 2 90 ( 90SG)
The teeth will have the proper angle (ß) automatically if the
proper r ound fi le i s u sed.
80° f or c hain t ype 0 92 ( 91VG), 4 92 ( 91PX), 2 90 ( 90SG)
Different a ngles r esult i n a r oughly, i rregularly r unning c hain,
increase w ear a nd t ear a nd c ause c hain b eakage.
