A crash switch is located at each end of the scanner along the lower beam (a total of two crash switches
per scanner). They serve as safety devices to protect the heads (and also the field personnel) if they fail to
turn around before reaching the end of the track.
If the head carriage strikes the rod and spring at the end of the crash switch, the switch will cut off power
to the motor controller. Experion MX operator station will indicate that a crash has occurred. The operator
must push the OFFSHEET button on the scanner after the heads have been manually repositioned inside
the area between the limit switches and the rod on crash switch has been back to extended position.
The crash switches also limit the minimum distance between the heads and both scanner end supports.
This space is required to prevent field personnel from being injured at the end supports by the traversing
heads.
End Support and Operator control
As shown in Figure 5-1, the horizontal beams are supported by the distant end support and the cable end support.
These supports also house the drive motor, and a variety of electronics and switches that control scanner functions
and provide diagnostic information. The distant and cable end supports, along with their associated operator
controls, are described in the following subsections.
Distant End Support
Figure XX shows the distant end support and its contents, including:
• Scan control panel – provides operator (local) control of scanning and sensor functions.
Note that an optional alternate location for the scan control panel exists on the cable end.
• Shutter status satellite box – indicates whether the Basis Weight and Ash sensor shutters
are open or closed.
• Emergency Stop switch.
• Optional location for Sample/Reference switch.
