1. Securely support the motorcycle on level
ground.
2. Remove the fuel tank, air filter housing and
surge tank as described in Chapter Eight, and the re-
move the frame neck cover (Chapter Fifteen).
3. Disconnect the electrical lead from the negative
battery terminal (A, Figure 1).
4. Disconnect the spark plug cap from the respec-
tive spark plug.
5. Disconnect the two primary coil spade connec-
tors (A, Figure 10) from the terminals on the igni-
tion coil.
6. Measure the primary coil resistance as follows:
a. Connect the ohmmeter positive test probe to
the red/black terminal on the ignition coil;
connect the negative test probe to the orange
(or gray) terminal. See Figure 11.
b. Replace the ignition coil if the primary resis-
tance is not within the specification listed in
Table 1.
7. Measure the secondary coil resistance as
follows:
a. Connect the ohmmeter positive test probe to
the spark plug lead; connect the negative test
probe to the orange (or gray) terminal. See
Figure 12.
b. Replace the ignition coil if the secondary coil
resistance is not within the specification listed
in Table 1.
8. Repeat this test for the other ignition coil.
Removal/Installation
1. Use jack stands or a scissors jack to securely
support the motorcycle on level ground.
2. Remove the fuel tank and surge tank as de-
scribed in Chapter Eight, and remove the frame
neck cover (Chapter Fourteen).
3. Disconnect the electrical lead from the negative
battery terminal (A, Figure 1).
4. Disconnect the spark plug cap from the respec-
tive spark plug.
NOTE
Note how the ignition coil's secondary
lead is routed through the frame. It
will have to be rerouted along the
same path during installation.

5. Disconnect the two primary coil spade connec-
tors (A, Figure 10) from the terminals on the igni-
tion coil.
6. Remove the two ignition coil bolts (B, Figure
10) and remove the coil.
7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
following:
a. Torque the ignition coil bolts to 2.5 N•m (22
in.-lb.).
b. Apply a dielectric compound to the primary
coil connectors (A, Figure 10) prior to recon-
necting them. This will help seal out moisture.
c. Make sure the electrical connectors are free
of corrosion and are completely coupled to
each other.
d. Install all removed items.
PICKUP COIL
Resistance Test
Test the pickup coil at a minimum temperature of
20° C (68° F).

The Yamaha V Star 1100 has an ignition circuit cut-off system integrated into the clutch lever holder. This system ensures that the starter motor will only engage if the clutch is pulled in, preventing accidental starts in gear. Additionally, the engine stop (kill) switch must be in the correct position to complete the ignition circuit. If the clutch is disengaged or the kill switch is off, the circuit remains open, preventing the starter from operating.

The Yamaha V Star 1100 wiring diagrams and directions are available toward the back of the repair manual. The diagrams show wire routing and connections for systems such as:

- Headlight, tail light, high beam indicator, meter illumination
- Front turn signals and position lights
- Main switch, dimmer switch, and pass switch
- Brake light and switches
- Horn circuit

To rewire the motorcycle from front to back:

1. Check the manual for the full wiring diagram.
2. Use the diagram to identify wire colors and connection points.
3. Inspect and test continuity of:
- Headlight and socket
- Turn signal bulbs and sockets
- Brake light bulbs and switches
- Fuses (main, signal, and headlight)
- Connectors and switches (main, dimmer, pass)
4. Restore wires using proper tools to crimp and match colors based on the diagram.

The repair manual is the main source for accurate wire locations and functions.
