infrared sensor that detects when the bin is full. The easy answer to this is to
have the customer just shake or rattle the cubes so that they are all level in
the bin. A large number of door openings can also slow down the production
process.
It's also very possible that low water pressure or a low flow rate can prevent
all seven cups from completely filling with water. In this case, the icemaker
will harvest normally, but with a reduced number of cubes. A frequent cause
for this is a defective or clogged saddle (piercing) valve. This valve is
commonly used to tap into a home's plumbing to provide water to the
icemaker.
IN SUMMARY: Many customers will not always have the ideal conditions to
produce the maximum quantity of ice. Discuss these tips with the customer. A
service call is not necessary.
"The ice cubes are stuck together"
This is normal. Each time the icemaker performs a harvest, a heater comes
on for a few seconds in the icemaker mold to loosen the cubes. When the
cubes drop, they are slightly wet. This means that they may stick together.
This is a very loose "sticking" and they are easily separated. Again, a daily
shakedown of the cubes will keep this to a minimum.
"The ice cubes are cloudy"
This is normal. When freezing a stationary quantity of water, the outside or
the top freezes first. As the rest of the cube freezes, air molecules dissolved
in the water begin to get squeezed by the expanding ice. These air molecules
get trapped inside the ice cube as bubbles, giving that cloudy appearance.
No ice
A customer complaint of no ice should be thoroughly investigated.
In the field, have the servicer check the freezer temperature with a
thermocouple before opening the freezer door for any length of time. Also
have the servicer collect a data dump with the MDU (where possible). This
data will be used to determine if the 'no ice' condition is the symptom of a
different problem.
Make sure the icemaker is turned on. The word "ICE" should be orange
on the control panel. If it is white, then the icemaker is turned off.
Make sure the water supply is connected and turned on.
Make sure that the freezer temperature is set (and really is) lower than
5°F.
Make sure that the freezer circulation fan comes on and there is airflow
when the door is closed.
Make sure that the ice bin is properly seated and nothing is blocking the
infrared sensor.
