Heater Test

Note:
Steps and amperage readings may vary per heater element.
Heater elements inside a freezer can require between 10 and 200 watts.
This means that an amperage increase ranging from as low as 0.05 amps
to as high as 3.00 amps could be registered on the multimeter during heater
element testing.
1. Remove the front toekick cover plates.
2. Remove the two screws securing the terminal block cover (refer to Figure
030-66, Item 1). Remove the cover.
3. Locate the L or Live 1 line connected to the terminal block and clip the
multimeter amp clamp to this wire. See Figure 030-16.

4. Set the multimeter to monitor amps, following the multimeter manufacturer's
instructions. An amperage reading will automatically show up in the display
of the multimeter because the appliance will have some components already
running (lights, fans, compressor, etc.).
5. Access service mode (see Section 030-4.3) and select a heater from the
list of component tests (see Table 030-20).
6. Monitor the multimeter for an amperage increase.
7. If an amperage increase is shown on the multimeter, then the heater element
is functioning. If no increase is registered (i.e. amperage reading stays
steady), then further troubleshooting is required. Other components to check
are thermostats, temperature limiters, wires, relays and the power electronic.
