Follow Rest

the follow rest in Figure 43 is mounted on the
saddle and follows the movement of the tool. it
can be attached/removed by two socket head
cap screws located at the base of the follow rest.
the follow rest requires only two fingers as the
cutting tool acts as the third. the follow rest is
used on long, slender parts to prevent flexing of
the workpiece from the pressure of the cutting
tool. it should be used when the workpiece length
to diameter ratio is 3:1 or greater.
the sliding fingers are set similar to those of the
steady rest—free of play but not binding. Always
lubricate during operation. remove the follow rest
from the saddle when not in use. After prolonged
use, the fingers will need to be milled or filed to
cleanup the contact surface.

Setting compound
Slide
the compound slide is used to cut tapers on parts
or to set the proper infeed angle when threading.
it may also be used to cut specific lengths longitu-
dinally, when set parallel to the spindle axis.
the compound slide handwheel has a graduated
dial for precise inch feed increments. the base
of the compound slide has a graduated scale for
angular setup.
To set the angular position:
1.
loosen the two cap screws, one on each side
of the compound slide (see Figure 44).

carriage to set the position.
3.
tighten the two cap screws. Be sure to not
overtighten, as you may strip threads.
