place the live center in the tailstock.

Attach a lathe dog to the bar stock and mount
it between centers (see Figure 36).

turn approximately 0.010" off the diameter.

Measure the stock with a micrometer.
—if the stock is thicker at the tailstock end,
the tailstock needs to be moved toward the
operator half the distance of the amount of
the taper (see Figure 37).

Mount a dial indicator so the dial plunger is
on the tailstock barrel before making adjust-
ments to the tailstock.
10. refer to cutting Shallow Tapers With The
Tailstock on page 27 for making adjust-
ments to the tailstock center. turn another
0.010" off of the diameter and check for a
taper. repeat this process as necessary until
the desired amount of accuracy is achieved.
