The part of a CATV system consisting of the transmission medium (coaxial cables, fiber optic
cables, etc.) used to carry signals from the headend system to subscriber terminals.

A device which permits the connection of both a receiver and a transmitter to a common
antenna.

EDFA
erbium doped fiber amplifier. Optical fibers doped with the rare earth element, erbium,
which can amplify light in the 1550 nm region when pumped by an external light source.
EEPROM
electrically erasable programmable read-only memory.
EMC
electromagnetic compatibility. A measure of equipment tolerance to external electromagnetic
fields.
EMS
Element Management System. A system that controls a single element, or many elements of a
single type. Usually works up into a full network management system (NMS).
EPROM
erasable programmable read-only memory.
EQ
equalizer.
equalization
The process of compensating for an undesired result. For example, equalizing tilt in a
distribution system.
