5. Install the new gaskets, thermostats and
thermostat covers, and then tighten the
cover bolts to specified torques.
Thermostat cover bolt:
1st : 4 N·m (0.4 kgf·m, 3.0 ft·lb)
2nd : 8 N·m (0.8 kgf·m, 5.9 ft·lb)

Checking the cooling water passage

1. Check the cooling water inlet cover 1,
screw 2 and cooling water inlet for clog-
ging. Clean the water inlet cover and
cooling water inlet if necessary.

2. Place the lower unit in water, and then
start the engine.

3. Check for water flow at the cooling water
pilot hole. If there is no water flow, check
the cooling water passage inside of the
outboard motor.

Control system

Adjusting the start-in-gear protec-
tion (MH, WH)
1. Set the gear shift to the neutral position.
2. Loosen the bolt 1, and then adjust the
start-in-gear protection cable 2 until the
mark a, aligns with the mark b as
shown.

3. Tighten the bolt 1.
