DPA (Demand Protocol Architecture) A technique for loading protocol stacks
dynamically as they are required. It is associated with adapter cards in workstations
and servers. Only the protocol stacks that are needed for a particular communications
sessions are loaded. Examples of stacks that could be loaded include TCP/IP, XNS,
SPX/IPX and NetBios.
DPI (Dots Per Inch) A measurement of a output device resolution and quality.
Measures the number of dots a printer can print per inch both horizontally and
vertically. A 600 dpi printer can print 360,000 (600 x 600) dots on one square inch of
paper.
DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) Random access solid state memory
which has to be continuously refreshed to retain its data.
DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) A piece of equipment where a communications
path ends. The user's equipment is collectively termed DTE and can include PCs
and display terminals.
DUMP Printout of a files contents without any report formatting.
Duplex Simultaneous, two-way independent transmission of data.
Duplexing The ability to print on both sides of a sheet of paper without manual
intervention. In some circles, duplexing is called perfecting. Some devices print both
sides simultaneously using multiple print engines. Others flip and re-direct the paper
so that it passes through the engine twice. There are two types of duplexing stackless
which prints the second side of the page right after the first side is printed, this
increases productivity and reliability and is limitless to the number of pages. The
second is stacked in a holding tray and is limited to the capacity of the tray.
Duty Cycle The durability of a printer, usually expressed in terms of how many
pages per month the manufacturer recommends for printing.
Dynamic node address An Apple-patented feature of AppleTalk under which each
node assigns itself a unique address code each time it is initialized. Conventionally,
nodes are assigned fixed addresses that do not change.
