Storing the Battery

If you are storing the machine for more than 30
days, remove the battery and charge it fully. Store
the battery in a cool atmosphere to avoid quick
deterioration of the charge in the battery. To prevent
the battery from freezing, make sure that it is fully
charged. The specific gravity of a fully charged battery
is 1.265 to 1.299.
Preparation for Seasonal
Storage
Follow these procedures whenever you store the
machine for more than 30 days.
Preparing the Traction Unit
1. Thoroughly clean the traction unit, cutting units,
and engine.
2. Check the tire pressure; refer to
Tire Pressure (page
3. Check all fasteners for looseness; tighten as
necessary.
4. Grease or oil all grease fittings and pivot points;
refer to Greasing the Bearings and Bushings
(page 37).
Note:
Wipe up any excess lubricant.
5. Lightly sand and use touch-up paint on painted
areas that are scratched, chipped, or rusted.
Note:
Repair any dents in the metal body.
6. Service the battery and cables as follows:
A. Remove the battery terminals from the
battery posts.
B. Remove the battery.
C. Slowly recharge the battery before storage
and every 60 days thereafter for 24 hours to
prevent lead sulfation of the battery.
To prevent the battery from freezing, make
sure it is fully charged. The specific gravity
of a fully charged battery is 1.265 to 1.299.
D. Clean the battery, terminals, and posts with
a wire brush and baking-soda solution.
E. Coat the cable terminals and battery posts
with Grafo 112X skin-over grease (Toro Part
No. 505-47) or petroleum jelly to prevent
corrosion.
F. Store the battery on the shelf or on the
machine in a cool area. Leave the cables
disconnected if you store it on the machine.

Preparing the Engine
1. Drain the engine oil from the oil pan and replace
the drain plug.
2. Remove and discard the oil filter and install a
new oil filter.
3. Fill the oil pan with approximately 3.8 L (4 US qt)
of SAE 15W-40 motor oil.
4. Start the engine and run it at idle speed for
approximately 2 minutes.
5. Stop the engine.
6. Thoroughly drain all fuel from the fuel tank, fuel
lines, fuel filter, and water separator assembly.
7. Flush the fuel tank with fresh, clean diesel fuel.
8. Secure all fuel-system fittings.
9. Thoroughly clean and service the air-cleaner
assembly.
10. Seal the air-cleaner inlet and the exhaust outlet
with weatherproof tape.
11. Check the anti-freeze protection and add as
needed for expected minimum temperature in
your area.
Preparing the Cutting Deck
If the cutting deck is separated from the traction unit
for any length of time, install a spindle plug in the top of
the spindle to protect the spindle from dust and water.
