Glossary

A
ac, AC
alternating current. An electric current that reverses its direction at regularly recurring
intervals.
AGC
automatic gain control. A process or means by which gain is automatically adjusted in a
specified manner as a function of input level or other specified parameters.
B
bdr
baseband digital reverse. Proprietary technology for transporting reverse signals by
converting them to from analog to digital format, optionally multiplexing two or more
digitized reverse signals, and then converting the electrical signal to an optical format for
transmission to a hub or headend via fiber optic link.
C
CAN
cancel. The cancel character.
D
dc, DC
direct current. An electric current flowing in one direction only and substantially constant in
value.
DFB laser
distributed feedback laser. An injection laser diode that has a Bragg reflection grating in the
active region to suppress multiple longitudinal modes and enhance a single longitudinal
mode.
DRR
dual reverse receiver.
E
EDFA
erbium doped fiber amplifier. Optical fibers doped with the rare earth element, erbium,
which can amplify light in the 1550 nm region when pumped by an external light source.
