Environmentally compatible waste management is an integral part
of the overall design of GE products. Eco-friendly waste
in accordance with applicable regulations is guaranteed.
When it comes to waste management, recycling of materials is
generally preferred to disposal.
Materials can be recycled as mixed scrap or - in cases where
equipment is largely disassembled - as sorted scrap with a small
residual amount of mixed scrap.
Sorted scrap is the preferred waste management option.
Switchgear has the following components:
- Ceramics / silicone
- Steel
- Aluminum
- Copper
- PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene)
- Casting resin (some of which is fabric-reinforced)
- Rubber materials used as seals and gaskets
- Plastics in the operating mechanism (auxiliary switches, cable
insulation, etc.)
- Hydraulic fluid
- Lubricants in small amounts
Waste management procedures must ensure that hydraulic fluids
present in mechanism dampers are drained off. Compliance with
regulations governing management of these wastes is required.
None of the oils and greases used in the switchgear contain PCBs
(polychlorinated biphenyls).
No hazardous substances covered by the German regulations
governing hazardous materials are present in the switchgear in as-
delivered condition. For export purposes, compliance with local
laws and regulations must be ensured.
The gas used for insulation and quenching is to be drawn off using
suitable equipment and reused after reprocessing.
Solid decomposition products generated by operations may be
present in the gas compartments. These products may constitute a
health hazard if the gas compartments are opened.
Gaseous decomposition products
