Servicing the Battery (continued)
Incorrectly routing the battery cable could damage the machine and cables, causing
sparks. Sparks can cause the battery gasses to explode, which could result in death
or serious injury.
• Always disconnect the negative (black) battery cable before disconnecting the
positive (red) cable.
• Always connect the positive (red) battery cable before connecting the negative
(black) cable.
1. Prepare the machine for maintenance.
2. Remove the battery cover.
3. Remove the filler caps of the battery.
4. Maintain the battery electrolyte level in the battery cells with distilled or demineralized
water.
Note:
5. Install the filler caps with the vents pointing to the rear (toward the fuel tank).
6. Clean the top of the battery by washing it periodically with a brush dipped in ammonia or
bicarbonate of soda solution. Flush the top surface with water after cleaning.
Do not remove the filler caps while cleaning.
7. Check the battery cable clamps and battery posts for corrosion. If corrosion occurs,
perform the following:
A. Disconnect the negative (–) battery cable.
B. Disconnect the positive (+) battery cable.
C. Clean the clamps and posts separately.
D. Connect the positive (+) battery cable.
E. Connect the negative (–) battery cable.
F. Coat the clamps and terminals with battery terminal protector.
8. Check that the battery cable clamps are tight on the battery posts.
9. Install the battery cover.
Note:
the battery from discharging more rapidly.

Store the machine where the temperature is cooler rather than warmer to prevent
