SECTION VI
TYPE 122 PRINTER
The Type 122 Printer prints single-spaced copy at a
rate of up to 450 lines a m.inute.
The standard unit record
for the printer is a printed line of 120 characters in length.
The Extended Print Option (Feature 1034) offers unit rec-
ords of 132 print positions.
For each print position, the
printer m.ay use anyone of 63 characters - 10 num.eric, 26
alphabetic, and 27 special sym.bols.
The printing speed of
450 lines per m.inute is attained for l20-print-position rec-
ords when 55 contiguous printer characters are used.
When
all 63 characters are used, the m.axim.um. printing speed is 400 lines per m.inute.
Vertical
spacing m.ay be set at either six or eight lines per inch.
Depending upon the paper stock used,
up to six carbon copies m.ay be produced.
The integrated printer control perform.s the following operations: (I) print one line and
space from. 1 to 15 lines (or to the head of the next form.); (2) advance paper without printing;
and (3) space according to a two-channel paper tape loop.
The m.axim.um. rate of proper advance
(skipping) is 55 inches per second.
The integrated control regulates the transfer of data between
the m.ain m.em.ory print-im.age area and the printer so as to reconcile the differing m.echanical
and electronic speeds and to m.inim.ize the interruption of central processor activities by data
transfer.
Data transfer is terrn.inated when a com.plete line im.age has been printed or when a
record m.ark is sensed in m.em.ory, whichever occurs first.
Operation of the printer is checked autom.atically to ensure that it responds correctly to
printing signals.
If the check fails, an autom.atic halt results.
MECHANICAL CONTROLS AND ADJUSTMENTS
There are several m.echanical controls and adjustm.ents which are located on the printing
m.echanism. for control of printing and paper feeding, as shown in Figure 6-1.
Head-of-Form. Adjustm.ent - An adjusting knob (see Figure 6-1, A) is accessible on the left side
of the printing m.echanism. to position the paper for proper vertical registration so that the
first line to be printed coincides with the scribed line on the paper guide.
The paper can
be positioned while the m.achine is either running or stopped.
Both the paper and the
vertical form.at control tape m.ove together to facilitate accurate positioning of form.s.
