Tailstock

The tailstock (see Figure 38) is typically used to
support long workpieces by means of a live or
dead center (refer to Centers on Page 74 in the
following section). It can also be used to hold a
drill or chuck to bore holes in the center of a part.
Custom arbors and tapers can also be cut on your
lathe by using the offset tailstock adjustment.
Also, a torque wrench can be used with the
tailstock for repeating super-accurate vertical
alignment.

Positioning Tailstock

1.
Rotate tailstock lock lever clockwise (facing
machine) to unlock tailstock from bedways.
2.
Slide tailstock to desired position by pushing
it along the bedways.
3.
Rotate tailstock lock lever counterclockwise
to lock tailstock against bedways.
Optional: To precisely secure the tailstock, mount
a
" drive torque wrench in the square drive

shown in Figure 38, then tighten the tailstock to
40 lbs/ft of torque. The center point will be drawn
down as much as 0.006". Do not exceed the max
torque or damage to ways and tailstock will occur.

Using Quill

1.
Rotate quill lock lever counterclockwise to
loosen quill.
2.
Turn quill handwheel clockwise to move quill
toward spindle or counterclockwise to move it
away from spindle.
3.
Rotate quill lock lever clockwise to secure
quill.

Installing Tooling

This tailstock uses a quill with an MT#3 taper that
has a lock slot in the back of the bore that accepts
tang arbors and drill bits (see the Figures below
for examples).
