O do rs are g ases, not particles. T h e y cann ot be
rem oved by the air c le a n e r or by an y other filter
d esig n ed to rem ove particles. H o w ev e r, som e
g as e s can be tra p p e d by an a ctivated carbon
filter or diluted with outdoor air. If odors are a
con cern , ta lk to you r heating and air condition­
ing d e a le r abo ut installing a carbon filter
d o w n s tre a m of the air c le a n e r or providing an
outdo or a ir inlet.
Air ionizers have been m arketed with claim s
about purifying the air and promising m edical
benefits. It should be noted that supporting tests,
if available, are controversial and incom plete.
A ir ionizers m ay g e n e ra te a bit of o zon e, and of
cou rse s o m e ions (air m o lecules with an electric
c h a rg e ). This is w h a t yo u r electronic air
c le an e r's ionizer d oes, but with g re a te r inten ­
sity. H o w ev e r, air ionizers do not h ave good
collectors, if any. W ith air ionizers, the charged
dirt particles are
furniture, requiring fre q u e n t clean ing of the
entire building to rem ove the effects of collected
con tam ination. By com parison, an electronic air
c le a n e r deposits con tam ination on th e cells and
prefilters fo r e a s y cleaning.

tration, and H ealth and W e lfa re C a n a d a
rec o m m e n d th a t indoor o zo n e concentration
should not e x c e e d 0 .0 5 0 ppm . As a c o m p a ri­
son, th e outdoor o zo n e level in m ajor cities is
s o m e tim e s h igher than 0 .1 0 0 ppm .
