Managing Quotas

Understanding Quotas

Quotas allow you to restrict space usage on the NAS server for individual users
and groups. The administrator can apply either specified limit values or default
limit values for each user or group. See
Editing a Group Quota
Quotas are established at the file volume level; each user and group can have one
quota per file volume. User and group quotas are listed under the file volume in
the Command View NAS, to allow you to view and manage all quotas set for a
specific file volume.
Soft and hard storage limits, and a grace period, can be set for each quota.
An email address can be specified for each user or group. If a quota is associated
with an email address, and the quota exceeds the soft or hard limit, a notification
message will be sent to the address specified.

The soft limit is the maximum amount of usable space, on an ongoing basis,
for the selected quota. This is the actual quota value.
Each quota has a grace period, after exceeding the soft limit, in which to
operate between the soft and hard limit. After the grace period is exceeded or
the hard limit is reached, the user or group can not save to the system until
files and directories are deleted from storage so that the quota is back below
the soft limit. This allows users to do the following: 1) save whatever they are
writing when they fill their quota; and 2) either delete files and directories to
free up space, or get their quota increased. The default grace period is seven
days; however, the grace period can be set to another value in increments of
days, hours, or minutes.
The hard limit is the value at which no further writes may occur regardless of
the grace period. This is the value that absolutely can not be exceeded by a
user or group.
Because the quota system does not pre-allocate space, it is possible to have a
