14.1 Battery Maintenance

It is very essential to maintain the batteries. This
applies particularly if the machine is left unused for
long periods, as a lawn mower often does during
the winter.
Batteries that are stored for long periods slowly
discharge, which eventually will damage the
batteries (sulfated battery) if they are not charged.
The following are some good tips on how to
maintain and protect the batteries and avoid being
damaged in vehicles that are not used regularly.
14.2 Measures when Rider Taken Out of
Service
Check whether the battery is cracked. A cracked
battery must be scrapped or repaired by a
specialist.
Clean the top of the battery, terminals and
connections with water and sodium bicarbonate.
Dirty and damp surfaces accelerate self-
discharging.
Terminal lugs must be clean, dry and lightly
greased to protect against corrosion.
Check the electrolyte level in the batteries and
top up with distilled water until it reaches the level
indicator in the battery. Maintenance charge the
battery to prevent discharging, use the battery
charger that comes with the machine. This handles
the charge automatically and keeps the battery in
good condition.

14.3 Before Taking into Service

Check that the connections on the battery are
clean and tight.
Check the level of charge and recharge if
necessary.
