Troubleshooting

Problem
The unit will not move when the traction
ball is engaged.
The unit will not transport at full speed.
The engine dies during startup.
The engine dies when the water system
is engaged.
The engine does not start (will not engage
the starter).
Possible Cause
1. Check that motion occurs at the pump
pivot plate when the traction ball is
moved.
2. The oil level in the hydraulic reservoir
(gearbox) is low.
3. Bypass valve is not fully closed.
4. The traction drive belt tension is
incorrect.
1. The unit is not fully raised to the
transport position.
2. The oil level in the hydraulic reservoir
(gearbox) is low.
3. Bypass valve is not fully closed.
4. The traction drive belt tension is
incorrect.
5. Check that motion occurs at the pump
pivot plate when the traction ball is
moved.
1. The fuel shut-off valve is closed.
2. Fuel in the fuel tank is low.
3. The engine choke is not operating
correctly.
4. Check the engine oil level.
5. Starting conditions are cold (30
degrees).
1. The throttle is in the wrong operating
position.
2. The engine speed is set incorrectly.
3. Engine power is low.
1. The traction bail is not in the neutral
position.
2. The neutral switch tab is out of
adjustment.
3. The battery voltage is low.
4. There is a malfunction is the electrical
system.

Corrective Action
1. Inspect the traction push/pull cable
and override assembly under the tiller
handle.
2. Replenish, if necessary.
3. Close the valve.
4. Adjust the belt tension.
1. Hold the lift toggle switch until the slip
clutch in the actuator can be heard
ratcheting and the spindle lift arms are
nearly vertical with the rear axle spindle
tipped away from the engine.
2. Replenish, as necessary.
3. Close the valve.
4. Adjust the belt tension.
5. Inspect the traction push/pull cable
and override assembly under the tiller
handle.
1. Open the fuel shut-off valve.
2. Replenish, if necessary.
3. Check the choke connections and
operation. Regulate the choke until the
engine is warm when starting a cold
engine.
4. The oil pressure switch is bypassed
during start, but must activate to protect
the engine while running.
5. Multiple start attempts may be required
to trip the oil pressure switch.
1. Put the throttle in the FAST position
when aerating.
2. Adjust the carburetor fast setting to
3450-3550 RPM.
3. Fuel is contaminated, there is
a plugged fuel filter or air filter,
or there is a bad spark plug.
Have the system serviced by an
Authorized Toro Distributor.
1. Correct the traction bail position.
2. Adjust the switch tab until the red
traction light is OFF in neutral.
3. Check the battery.
4. Check the circuit breaker and electrical
connections.
