Configuring VTP
This chapter describes how to configure the VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) on the Catalyst 6500 series
switches.
For complete syntax and usage information for the commands that are used in this chapter, refer to the
Note
Catalyst 6500 Series Switch Command Reference publication.
This chapter consists of these sections:
Understanding How VTP Version 1 and Version 2 Work
VTP is a Layer 2 messaging protocol that maintains VLAN configuration consistency by managing the
addition, deletion, and renaming of VLANs on a network-wide basis. VTP minimizes misconfigurations
and configuration inconsistencies that can result in a number of problems, such as duplicate VLAN
names, incorrect VLAN-type specifications, and security violations.
You can use VTP to manage VLANs 1–1005 in your network. (VTP version 1 and VTP version 2 do not
support VLANs 1025–4094.) With VTP, you can make configuration changes centrally on one switch
and have those changes automatically communicated to all the other switches in the network.
For complete information on configuring VLANs, see
