Procedure 2
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if the data cable that connects the FDD to the
system board, and the power cable that supplies power from the power supply unit to the
FDD through the P6 connector, are damaged or are not connected properly. To perform this
procedure, begin with Check 1 and continue as instructed.
Check 1
Inspect the data and power cables to the FDD for damage and appropriate
connections.
If the data and power cables are not damaged and are properly connected,
perform Check 3. If the data and power cables are damaged or are not properly
connected, perform Check 2.
Check 2
(A) Replace damaged cables, or reconnect the improperly connected connectors
(refer to section 4.1.3.). (B) Test to determine if the problem still exists.
If the problem still exists, perform Check 3. If the problem no longer exists,
perform the Repair Completion Process.
Check 3
(A) Insert a known good bootable MS-DOS diskette into the FDD. (B) Restart
the computer and attempt to boot from the FDD.
If the system boots, perform Check 4. If the system does not boot, perform
Procedure 3.
Check 4
(A) Clean the FDD heads using a head-cleaning kit. (B) Perform FDD
diagnostics using the QAPlus® Diagnostics program . (C) Attempt to copy
several files from C: to A: and from A: to C:.
If FDD errors are reported, perform Procedure 4. If FDD errors are not reported,
perform Check 5.
Check 5
Determine if the original problem still exists.
If the original problem still exists, perform the Problem Definition Process. If the
original problem no longer exists, perform the Repair Completion Process.
Procedure 3
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if the power supply unit is providing the
appropriate voltages to the FDD. To perform this procedure, perform the following Check.
Check
Measure the FDD power cable to ensure the yellow cable has 12VDC power and
the red cable has 5VDC power.
If the power cable does not have the correct voltages, perform the Power Supply
Troubleshooting Process. If the power cable does have correct voltages, perform
Procedure 4.
