Glossary
S-Video
Super Video, a video transmission standard where the data is transmitted over a
number of lines. S-Video offers a higher picture quality and resolution, better colour
reproduction and less flickering than FBAS.
SCART
Syndicat des Constructeurs d'Appareils Radio Récepteurs et Téléviseurs (also Euro-AV).
21-pin plug-and-socket connection, which was standardised for connecting peripherals
such as video recorders or set-top boxes to a television. The circuitry of individual con-
tacts can vary depending on the application.
Set-Top Box (STB)
Standard term for add-on devices that receive and decode data and transmit it to a tel-
evision set for playback. A DVB set-top box, for example, receives compressed digital tel-
evision signals and converts these to picture and sound signals that can be displayed by
a television.
Teletext
Also referred to as videotext. Teletext is broadcast by a number of channels in parallel
to the TV programmes. A special decoder decrypts the signals and processes them. The
information content varies from channel to channel but is split into a number of topic
areas.
Timeshift
Delayed viewing. The set-top box records the current ongoing programme in the back-
ground. If you are interrupted while viewing the programme, for example by a tele-
phone call, you still miss nothing: You can continue watching after the interruption
from the position where you were interrupted. Meanwhile the programme continues
and is recorded so that everything can be viewed fully later on.
Toslink
Standardised connection system for the transmission of digital signals. The devices are
connected by means of a fibre optic cable via the optical SPDIF sockets.
Tuner
Receiver part for television and radio programmes. Only one programme can generally
be received per tuner.
