5.5 Component maintenance
O-ring check and replacement
It is recommended to check the O-rings for flexibility and surface smoothness at
regular intervals (see Section 5.1 User maintenance schedule‚ on page 26)
Change the O-rings when flexibility is less than satisfactory or O-ring surfaces have
been damaged, scratched or worn out.
Use a spatula to pry out worn out O-rings. To replace O-rings that seal against the
adapter tube, please refer to Section 5.4 Disassembly and assembly‚ on page 27.
If changing is required, use the solvent resistant sealing kit as found in Section 7.4
Ordering information‚ on page 7. The Kit contains all O-rings shown in the exploded
diagram Figure 7-1 on page 38.
Care of filters
It is recommended to clean the filters and distributors at regular intervals (see
Section 5.1 User maintenance schedule‚ on page 26)
The FineLINE 35 oligo column is designed with a minimum of components, which
facilitates cleaning and reliable operation. In normal routine operation, the column
requires only a little regular maintenance.
Excluding the media, the main cause of column malfunction is blockage of the column
filters.
Cleaning the nets and distribution plates
Sonicate in MeOH for 30 minutes and let dry.
Testing the cleaned nets and distribution plates
If the adapter and the cleaned nets are connected to the system over a beaker and a
flow rate of 2 x 100 ml/min is started, the pressure reading on the pump display/
UNICORN should be 3 bar ± 0.5 bar, depending on the length of the tubing connected to
the adapter.
Replacement
If filters need to be replaced, follow the procedures described in Section Bottom filter
unit replacement‚ on page 31 and Section Adapter filter unit replacement‚ on page 31.
